“Apple Intelligence To Benefit Families”

[COMMENTS FROM DONNA GARNER: My close friend who wrote this article has followed Apple very carefully for many years. He was very concerned about the way that Apple might handle the issue of AI at its yearly conference in San Francisco on 6.6.24.
Even though the news media for months has been railing against Apple and how “behind the curve” the company is, once again Apple has shown its ingenuity with a strong focus on much-improved personal and family uses that will be built into the new iPhones and Apple products coming out in September 2024.]

On June 6, 2024, Apple introduced “Apple Intelligence,” preferring to use its own name instead of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
It is very important to understand why Apple chose the name “Apple Intelligence” and how it differs from the typical use of the term “AI.”
Understanding these differences will help the public understand how useful Apple Intelligence will be to accomplish everyday tasks on their Apple devices (iPhones, iPads, Mac computers).
This will include doing practical tasks in less time, with less effort, and with fewer mistakes.
Specifically, Apple Intelligence will be able to understand and output language/images and take actions, all while considering the user’s personal content.
The new Apple devices will become our own personal assistant.
PERSONAL EXAMPLE
To illustrate Apple Intelligence at the 6.6.24 yearly Apple meeting, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, gave a hypothetical “real-world” example.
Let us say that he needed to re-schedule a team meeting at Apple’s campus but also did not want it to conflict with attending his daughter’s school play in San Francisco.
Ordinarily, this would require his having to input (a) the time of the proposed team meeting, (b) the time of the play, (c) the location of the play, (d) and knowledge of the route and tentative time to travel to the play, given real-time traffic data.
However, with the use of Apple Intelligence, he simply would speak to his Mac saying, “I need to re-schedule a team meeting and still make it to my daughter’s play.”
The result: The meeting would be re-scheduled with notice to the team members, and he would know the exact route and time to travel to the location.
He would arrive on time and love the play; and, of course, it would likely thrill his daughter for her daddy to come to her play.
The new Apple Intelligence would literally perform this task in seconds.
Apple Intelligence would be able to use (1) information about the father’s location at Apple Park, (2) knowledge of his daughter’s name from her photo on his phone, (3) information about the date, time, and location of the play from an invitation from the school, and (4) information about travel from Apple Maps.
All of this data would be up-to-date and could change in real-time if necessary.
I find that example quite amazing because this is the type of task that many of us must perform many times during a typical week.
We love our families and want to do these tasks; but they can “wear us out,” cause stress, and sometimes result in mistakes.
APPLE PRIVACY
Another significant advantage of Apple Intelligence is that it exemplifies yet another example of the importance that Apple places on privacy.
In this case, it protects a person’s privacy because most of the tasks could be performed on a device we carry around with us most of the time, namely an iPhone. This is possible because of the powerful computer chips in our iPhones (or other Apple devices).
If more complex computations were necessary, then those could be performed by Apple’s Private Cloud Compute.
In this case, the task could be performed on Apple’s servers (with Apple’s own powerful chips specialized for AI).
Only the information necessary for the task would be sent to Apple’s cloud servers; it would be encrypted so that even Apple employees could not read the information; and it would not be stored.
In some cases, the task might require using a chatbot, such as ChatGPT by OpenAI; but a person would always have to give permission for that to occur. Even then the entire request and result would not be stored.
LOOKING AHEAD TO SEPT. 2024
The bottom line is that the apps on a person’s Apple devices using Apple Intelligence will make people’s lives easier, less stressful, and will give people more time to enjoy life with their loved ones.
