The good news is that the Texas Legislature has recently passed SB 17 authored by Tex. Rep. Brandon Creighton which takes effect on Jan. 2024.
SB 17 prohibits Texas universities (supported by Texas taxpayers’ dollars) from hiring people to staff a Diversity Equity Inclusion (DEI) office.
SB 17 also blocks these universities from implementing training, activities, and policies which push race, color, or ethnicity. Universities all over Texas are presently reviewing their policies on DEI and shutting them down.
Besides that, on June 29, 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court banned the consideration of race in college admissions which effectively ended affirmative action in colleges and universities.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M administrators (who were falling in line with the DEI/CRT/LGBTQ agenda) had decided to try to build up its journalism program. Where did Texas A&M unwisely go to find someone to lead it? They went to a person who had worked at The New York Times for 20 years and who had been the director of the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Journalism for six years – Kathleen McElroy.
McElroy is quoted as having said, “Every faculty member and staff member of color is an ad hoc Diversity, Equity and Inclusion officer at UT because our number are so small. I have been attending seminars and reading articles about attracting faculty of color because we all have to identify, hire and nurture faculty of color as we have done for privileged groups.”
Another quote of hers is, “We can’t just give people a set of facts anymore. I think we know that and so have to tell our students that. This is not about getting two sides of a story or 3 sides of a story, one side is illegitimate. I think now you cannot cover education, you cannot cover criminal justice, you can’t cover all of these institutions without recognizing how all these institutions were built.”
My translation of McElroy’s statement: “Blame everything bad in this country on ‘White Supremacy,’ and this includes every institution in the entire United States. Never mind that people from all walks of life, from every race, every ethnicity, and from every sex (male and female) have managed to work together to help make America great; and people from around the world will do almost anything to come here.”
Each student in the United States should be guaranteed the opportunity to gain a quality education, but the OUTCOMES rest on the hard work of the student.
It is clear that as a journalist, Kathleen McElroy runs everything in life through the filter of “White Supremacy.”
Thank goodness for the pressure on the Texas A&M administration from SB 17 and those alums/students at Texas A&M who value a person’s character over race/ethnicity/sex/LGBTQ/DEI/CRT.
Kathleen McElroy has decided to stay at UT and will not be allowed to turn out leftist journalists at Texas A&M nor to advocate for all faculty members being forced to sign a loyalty oath supporting social justice, race, ethnicity, sex, and gender identity OVER the vast importance of people’s character and their academic and personal accomplishments through hard work.
Of course, per par for the course, Kathleen McElroy is not going quietly and is bad-mouthing A&M to the press and to social media every step of the way.
Who cares?
Let her gripe all she wants.
I am very thankful for the Texas Legislators who passed SB 17, to the U. S. Supreme Court and their recent decision to ban affirmative action, and to the patriotic students and alums at Texas A&M University who said, “Enough is enough. We are not going to let our university fall into the leftist trap where facts don’t matter and where great injustice is being done to those students from all backgrounds who aspire to excellence through hard work.”
