“Muslim ‘University’ vs. Texas A&M”
From Donna Garner

A Muslim “university” in Richardson, Texas, appears to have tried to make itself look highly respected by “stealing” its name from the Texas A&M University System, specifically Texas A&M University.
The Muslim “university” has been advertising itself as “TexAM University.”
LEGAL ACTION BY TEXAS A&M
Now the Texas A&M University System is threatening legal action against the Texas American Muslim University for alleged trademark infringement.
It appears that because the Texas A&M University System is highly ranked, the Muslim “university” decided to turn itself into a “look-alike” of Texas A&M.
TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT
On 5.8.26, the Texas A&M University System sent the Muslim “university” officials a cease-and-desist letter demanding that they stop using names and branding elements that “infringe upon or dilute” Texas A&M’s trademarks.
The Texas A&M officials stated that by using “TexAM” or “Texas AM University,” the Muslim school could be confused with and/or mislead the public to think the “university” is affiliated or endorsed by the Texas A&M System or the College Station A&M campus.
TEXAS A&M WILL PROTECT ITS NAME
Texas A&M Chancellor Glenn Hegar stated that the Texas A&M University System has the responsibility to protect the name, trademark, institutional integrity, and public trust of the good name of A&M.
The Muslim “university” indicates that it is registered with the Secretary of State of Texas and operates under the DBA [i.e., Doing Business As] name of “Texas American Muslim University at Dallas.”
When the public enters “Texas American Muslim University” into a search engine, a side bar gives information about Texas A&M University in College Station.
TEXAS A&M WARNS MUSLIM SCHOOL FOUNDER
Shahid Bajwa is the Muslim’s school founder, and he could not be contacted on 5.8.26 when The Dallas Morning News tried to contact him for a comment.
The Texas A&M officials went on to outline definite steps that Shahid Bajwa and the Muslim “university” must take to avoid further litigation such as removing the “TexAM University” and any other similar name or mark from its Texas Secretary of State website, state filings, social media content, and marketing materials.
Any advertising materials with similar markings to the Texas A&M brand must be destroyed.
The Muslim “university” must immediately stop selling any merchandise bearing those marks.
The Texas A&M officials also told Shahid Bajwa that the website domain name — texam.education — must be taken down within ten business days.
TEXAS HIGHER EDUCATION COORDINATING BOARD’S JOB
Under Texas state law, private universities in Texas must be authorized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board [THECB] to be approved to grant degrees.
The Texas American Muslim University has been advertising itself as the first university in the country to offer STEM degree programs with mandatory courses in Islamic studies.
TEX. GOV. GREG ABBOTT SPEAKS OUT
On 5.7.26 Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the Muslim “university” to cease operations, advertising, and enrolling new students because the school was violating state law by operating as a higher education institution without being properly authorized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).
Gov. Greg Abbott described the Muslim “university” as an “illegal educational institution.”
THECB must authorize universities to “prevent deception of the public” based on “fraudulent or substandard college and university degrees.”
Institutions that are already accredited or working toward accreditation have to apply to THECB for authorization.
“TexAm University” is NOT listed in the U.S. Department of Education’s database of accredited postsecondary institutions and programs.
RESPONSE FROM MUSLIM “UNIVERSITY”
Bajwa said the school started its first semester in Oct. 2025 and that they were aware of the state’s process for authorization.
He stated on 5.7.26 that the school leaders are “in the process of seeking the necessary authorizations and accreditation and will not offer degrees until all regulatory approvals are secured.”
He also said that the Muslim “university” is mostly funded through donations.
